Poker Planning Technique
The Planning Poker technique is designed to assess the volume and complexity of tasks that need to be implemented during software development. Such assessment is carried out by a wide range of specialists of various profiles - developers, testers, analysts, designers and other team members.
Working with the Planning Poker technique includes the following stages:
- Selecting a task for assessment.
-
Hand out special cards to all team members, or use online services (such as Planningpoker.com) if the team is working remotely. Then set values for all cards and choose a unit of measurement, for example, the time spent on solving a task can be estimated from
0to5. - The team is presented with a task and given time for everyone to determine which card value they think will correspond to the solution. Then everyone must put the chosen card face down in sync with the other participants.
- Everyone opens their cards and evaluates the result. Also, each team member explains why he chose one value or another. Then there is a vote and a joint decision on the task.
