Characters Allowed in Domains

Initially, only characters from the Latin alphabet, digits, and the hyphen were allowed for domain names.

Then, after some time, characters from national alphabets were allowed. For example, you can now register a domain in Cyrillic, such as: магазин.ru.

Let's look at the restrictions on domain names:

• The name length must be from 2 to 63 characters.
• Character case does not matter. For example, the domains mysite.com and MySite.com are considered the same.
• The name must not contain hyphens in both the 3rd and 4th positions simultaneously.
• The name must not start or end with a hyphen.
